Tom’s Restaurant: A Fresh Look for an Amherst Classic
Preserving a Local Legacy
Tom’s Restaurant—Home of the Souvlaki®—is more than a place to grab a bite; it’s an Amherst institution. This multi-generational, family-owned business located at the corner of Bailey and Sheridan has been serving up its iconic Souvlaki and friendly service for decades. When the pandemic forced Tom’s to temporarily close, the owners saw an opportunity to reimagine the future of their business—starting with the interior.

Objectives of the Project
Coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic, Tom’s aimed to:
- Modernize the restaurant’s interior while staying true to its roots.
- Streamline operations by focusing the menu and adapting to increased demand for online and takeout ordering.
- Plan for an exterior facelift to reflect the refreshed brand and elevate the dining experience.
Achieved Solutions & Community Benefits
With support from the Town of Amherst, Tom’s was introduced to the Erie County Storefront Revitalization Program—a key turning point that accelerated their long-term goals. As a result:
- Tom’s received funding support of up to $40,000 for exterior improvements.
- The restaurant completed a full facade update much sooner than originally anticipated.
- The renewed exterior not only reflects the quality within but also contributes to the visual appeal and vibrancy of the Bailey-Sheridan corridor.
